2007 xlt f150 engine replacement
ok i just got the quote from the dealership that its going to be 10k to replace my engine on my f150 2007 150k miles, it has a rough idle but runs ok if you ask me, they said something is broken in the engine and it would take 2.5k to find and fix it if possible, and if they cant fix it i would owe that plus the cost of a new engine, 9998k sounds a little too much if you ask me but i know 5.4l 3v are tough to come by if you go reman, should i look into jasper? fraser?

Lots of shops don't want to just repair the timing because of the unknown variables, but it it definitely an option if you diy or find the right shop.
I think if I was going to spend the large cash I would drive the truck all the way to fordtexhmakiloco in Michigan and have him do it, but I am a diy kind of guy, so my plan is just to go through and change out all the timing stuff myself for about $1k in parts including a melling hv oil pump.
"something is broken in the engine"
I would find a local shop to diagnose your issue. Poor idle does not warrent a new engine, maybe new phasers, but not new engine. Your issue may be something simple.
It seems like a lot of dealerships are clueless and throw thier arms up and say "you need a new engine".
BTW my sister called me two weeks ago when her heater quit working. I told her to check the coolant level, she did and it was out of sight low. So I told her to add some distilled water and take it to the dealer since it was still under warranty. I told her to make sure the dealer understood that you added distilled water and not tap water and she did. Since there was a TSB (19-2346) on her car, the dealer bore scoped the cylinders looking for any evidence of coolant inleakage and found no problem. Next day same problem with low coolant but this time white smoke from tail pipe. Dealer provided her with a loaner car and did a 5 hour coolant bleed down test which it failed. TSB then says "follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the long block engine assembly". I told my sister to "stand-by" for a 3 month wait on this repair but the following Friday (4 days later) dealer told her engine had been replaced. She picked it up and so far (about a week) so good. Zero cost to her. If this had occurred outside the warrenty period it would have cost between $8,500 and $10,000 so I guess sometimes the "you need a new engine" statement is true, saved by the TSB.

@zack74 Wanting to replace a running engine with the only thing you describing as a rough idle makes me scratch my head. I mean, the stealership may be right but I would want to find someone knowledgeable about the timing components and whatever else the stealership is claiming.
I watch YouTube channels like the Car Wizard and listen to him bash the 5.4L 3V as the worst one every made and it will immediately fail on everyone that's had one to which there is nothing and no amount of money nor knowledge that can be done to prevent it. Sheesh. That's the number one reason I never watch that YouTube channel anymore.

hey Zack,
Still running Ok with a rough idle could be something as simple as the throttle body needing a good cleaning.. Just cleaned mine per erratic idle and poor acceleration, and she has lightning throttle response and better low, mid and high range throttle advance.
Could also be VCT's, but I would find a reputable diagnostic place with a high end scan tool to do a PID check of the VCT response to throttle under load.
Could even be a bad coil or plug. So many things can justify a rough idle but definitely not an R&R of a new engine.

I'm in the same boat. 2008 xlt w/ 215k that runs slightly rough occasionally, but I have the CEL for cam position sensor. Dealership and another shop both instantly said I need a new engine for 10k. Wondering if I should keep trying other shops to try to find someone who'll replace phasers/timing chain/tensioners, etc. Or just bit the bullet and have a warranty. I really like the truck and want to keep it.
Mostly just feeling like I'm getting blown off and shops not wanting to work on the timing systems anymore.

At that mileage on the engine, most shops are weighing the high likelihood of engine wear (especially valvetrain) aside from timing components and you may be well ahead of the ballgame going straight for a remanned engine. Granted, that not a $10K job nor reliant on a dealership.
You can find plenty of “Did timing job, engine still runs like garbage” stories around here.

Ford dealership is charging $9998 for new motor installed with ford parts with 3 year warranty.
Powertrain is $3600 and a shop charges $5-7k ro do the install. Thats almost 10k there. Why wouldn't the dealership be the way ro go?
I'd have a hard time finding a shop i trusted to do the work.
Not sure if you noticed this but Powertrain is not showing a 2007 5.4 3v. Every year around it but that one (??) . I have a 07 too.
