2006 XLT 5.4 transmission problems
#12
So did the truck last after the fix?
And FYI to anybody with an '04-'08 F150, the shafts between gears and the 3rd gear drum are EXTREMELY weak, they were made very cheaply during these years, and if this happens to your truck, get it rebuilt with aftermarket parts. Ford did a lot of warranty jobs on these and replaced them with completely different parts, rather than do a recall like they honestly SHOULD have done knowing that there were faulty and WAY weaker parts in the transmissions of these trucks than they should have had. This mechanic said that those shafts are so weak, he doesn't know how most of them last as long as they do.

2006 fx4 5.4 automatic transmission issues
Two months ago Ipurchased this truck with 202,000 for $5,500.00. It runs great, one owner and no obvious issues. Fast forward 1 month and I did a complete brake overhaul. Fast forward another month and I'm sitting at a red-light, when the light turned green I hit the gas and nothing happened. The wrench light came on the a transmission fault light came on and overall the dash lit up danger, It was like a terrible studder. I cycled through the gears to see if it would help and it did not. Finally it kind of started moving, maybe 2 miles per hour and I was able to get off the main road. I cycled the power, checked fuses, checked transmission fluid, I tried everytjing.everything. It was like the transmission was stuck in neutral and no matter which gear I out it in it would not shift out. An absolute headache.
So I had it towed to my house and finished the day at work. I began researching that night online to see if anyone else had these issues. Luckily I found a few forums explaining electrical issues could be the culprit. The transmission had not given me any problems before and worked great. So I took a deeper dive. The next day I worked and researched more. Sunday I took the day off and dropped the transmission pan to have a look and see if there were any big chunks in it or any other outliers to signal complete transmission failure. Other than murky fluid I saw no issues. I researched again and stumbled upon issues with the following components.
Transmission speed sensor
transmission control solenoid
mass airflow sensor
torque controller clutch solenoid
spark plugs ( I did not need to use these but they were my last resort
so i went to the local autozone and spend a small fortune in tools and the above mentioned components.
I took everything apart and one by one began replacing the old components. Then I filled the truck back up with transmission fluid ( at least 9 quarts of it)
Turned her on and cycled gears.... she worked perfectly. Drove around the block, no issues. Even got on the gas down the street and she seems to run better.
Moral of the story. Don't spend $2,500 on a new transmission. Replace the above mentioned parts, Thank me later
