TSBs are used to help diagnose and repair common issues. They aren't recalls, but more of a note released to dealerships to help save them time. You should not be surprised that a local dealership would want to charge you for their time, if the truck is not under warranty or covered by a recall (so they can't bill Ford). Dealers are privately owned businesses and like any business can't afford to work for free.

That being said, a software update is a rather simple thing to do, so the dealers with better service that like to keep their customers happy (and coming back) may elect to do it for free.

Whether or not something like this should be considered a recall is a different conversation, but since this particular issue is not a recall, you can't expect free service. It may help however to show up at the service desk with a box of dunkin donuts and box of joe.

 

Guess I see it slightly different.

If the TSB fixes an issue for a component that is under warranty then it should be covered.

If for $35 it fixes the issue then so be it. Not a biggie.

I think I would have certainly had a different attitude if it was in the hundreds of dollars.

in any case I'm hoping that it brings my mileage back up the 2-3 mpgs the truck has lost over the period the problem has been occurring.

Time will tell.
