Default 08 5.4 A/C Issue

Having an issue with my A/C losing charge. Took it to my local mechanic who I trust and he advised me that the compressor shaft seal is going out. Here is the question I have. They are advising me that it cant be replaced (from what I'm finding on the interwebs) it can be but almost sure to leak if you do. They are basically saying it's best to replace the compressor, dryer and much of the A/C system. Quoting me 1400.00 for everything and it will come with a lifetime warranty after this. Again I do trust these guys and just wanting to pick your brains to see if yall have had any experience with this issue. Thanks in advance.

I would get a second opinion. Do you know anyone with a friend in the automotive A/C business?

No. Not really. I'll ask around.

Dam $1400 sounds pretty steep. I thought I had an ac issue and a shop around here that only does ac quoted me under $600 for brand new compressor, all ac components and labor. 3 year warranty. Never seen someone give lifetime warranty on ac.

That seems high... AC parts at a store should run anywhere from 2-250ish. Flag time is about 4.5 hours. I would say anywhere in between the 6-800 range would he fair. I’ve also never seen lifetime AC work... Most part stores only offer a 2 year warranty after you change the accumulator and orfice tube.

Got a nephew that's a mechanic but he's in Mississippi and I'm in Idaho. But I talked with him and he said he could get me the parts from autozone that would be 350 for the compressor, dryer, tube and rings. I'm thinking maybe I'll do it myself and then run into a shop and have it pulled down and charged. 500 max that way and those parts come with a lifetime warrant. Not to worried yet because it's 30 for a high today.

I would make double sure, before all of the work is done, that you dont have a leaking evap core also!

Was scared that's what it was. Buy the dye didn't show any indication of that. They make the kit that replaces the shaft seal but from all indications they will leak. Not sure I wanna go that route.
