Default 05 Rear Diff leaking

My baby is in shop (first time ever) the rear dif is leaking. Extended warranty says they won't cover it if not maintained !! How do you maintain your rear dif? Other than fluid checks etc. 73k miles is it normal for the rear dif to leak at 73k?

Your extended warranty probably only cover's power and drive train...not gaskets and seals...read it carefully...where is it leaking from ??

Per Ford's manual, you are not supposed to maintain the rear diff, unless it was submerged in water or the seal is leaking.

My truck went into the dealer for a vibration that ended up being the rear brakes...long story short they changed everything back there including the dust shield which I guess prompted them to remove the rear axle...why they replaced that is beyond me...anyway a few months later it started leaking out of the axle seal by the wheel and my warranty was up. Dealer stinks! I would take it to a reputable mechanic instead if the warranty won't cover it.

This is a common problem with ford. seals give out. If you have the 5.4 liter v8, my I suggest you dump your truck before the engine fails. This is also a common problem with the 2004 ford 5.4 v8 triton engine. When it goes, you are looking at a $6,500.00 bill. Take it from me. I was told this when I bought the vehicle in 2004. You could register a complaint with the NHTSA. Go to "safercar.gov"

It's not a big deal to get the seal replace. The most expensive part is buying new fluid and friction modifier. Just pop the cover off, scrap the old gasket material off, lay a bead of black permatex around it, put cover back on, and fill 'er up!

Let me know if you have any more questions, I did this just a couple weeks ago in my garage.

new diff oil every 35-40k, the seal for the cover is just rtv silicone. Common to leak, mine was starting to leak here at 36k so I just changed the oil in all diffs and transfer case and resealed all covers with silicone. Problem solved. Like said, the synthetic lube that is called for for the front and rear diffs will be the most expensive. And friction modifier if you have LSD. Transfer case is just ATF.
