Default 05 f150 supercrew 4x4 not engaging..help

Okay so heres the deal, I have an 05 f150 supercrew, 5.4 3v, 50000 miles and am having trouble with my 4wd system. About 2 months ago, before winter was sitting in bad here I was sitting in my yard and turned the **** to 4 hi and nothing happened, dropped it into N and turned the **** to 4 low and nothing happened. Tried this several times with nothing at all, just like the **** was not doing a thing. A few days later I did the same thing and it worked like a charm. Ive had several times after this that it would either work or not work. We got our first big snow this winter here and I got up to goto work this morning and it was 15 degrees outside and low and behold I tried off and on all day to get the dang thing to go into 4wd but it doesnt do anything...not even while moving or in any other scenario. The only thing thats saved me in the snow has been my limited slip and new firestone tires lol. Can someone please help me by maybe pointing out some things I should check and where theyd be located. If this is a common problem...what would be the first thing to check. If it was a fuse or something wouldnt it be happening all the time instead of off and on? Is this something to do with the cold weather....please help guys..thanks.

integrated wheel end... the hub that your 4 wheel drive ties in your front axles
it's located on the fire wall behind the battery, they get water in them and goo bad, simple to replace

Okay so i finally got to order the iwe solenoid, went to autozone and advance junk and batteries, had the part in their computer but could NOT order it because apparently Dorman mfg didnt have it in their factory...called Ford dealership, said he could have one in a week for $45..got on google and searched for it and found it for 18 from amazon, its on its way...only thing is it looks like its in some kind of cover, different than the bracket on my firewall now, like its been redesigned to keep out rain or snow...is this the right part? says it fits and the part # is 600400 same as at autozone and advance.

don't know part number but they did design it with a rain shield on top to prevent the water issue

ford dealer looked up the OEM part when you called. not the replacememt. the OEM is 45-50, the redesigned is 20-25. and yes, thats dealer prices. remember, most dealer parts counter/service advisers are SALESMAN, not mechanics.

and yes, the new one has a hood over it to protect it from water. take your battery out to make installation easier.

sloowwww down... does the 4x4 hi or lo light come on in the dashboard when you turn the 4x4 switch? If not, then it is not the IWE solenoid, its the 4x4 electric motor on the transfer case..
