Excessive clutch gap will cause the clutch to drop out as the clutch components heat soak. Works fine up until then.

No puller needed. Once the bolt is removed, it's just a matter of carefully prying the hub off.
I'll say ambient plus some. If your thinking blend door, been there and replaced the actuator, made certain the door was not blocked by anything. That was a PITA

No, I wasn't thinking "blend door", I was thinking "ambiguous description that needed clarification". Loss of blend door control or function causes a different set of symptoms as compared to the refrigeration system dropping off line.

Okay...

Gap at AC clutch is .049. Understand that should be .023, correct? Then to figure out how to get to it...

It's hard to reach, but not too hard to do. Might be a lot easier to take the fan and shroud off to get in there, but not sure. I am losing freon I think from the compressor, so I'll be replacing it soon too damn hot lately without ac.

I was loosing Freon at the compressor also. I had to replace it so I did everything except the condenser core. I would recommend doing it also as I had to anyway. It's a pain in the butt but definitely doable.

op, sorry for the hijack here.
I was going to wait til I take it apart and look at the orifice tube filter and see if there's any junk in there. The AC works for a few days before it leaks down.
Heathmc, any tips for getting the compressor out? It looks like might be able to slide it forward after removing the 3 mounting bolts and then be able to actually see the pressure lines and remove them?

Update: I have AC back on the highway!! Whoa!

I did remove the fan and shroud to get to it and well worth doing! AutoZone has a loaner program and had both tools for removing both (fan/clutch-plate).Thank you AZ for doing that! I pulled what seemed to be the only spacer and remounted to a .020 gap. I see wear on the plate and should look into replacement, like this fall...

The biggest PITA was getting the fan back on. Not even sure a second set of hands would have helped..

Per FSM, acceptable gap is .014-.030". You were WAAAAAY over, surprised it even worked at all.

Glad you were able to perform a shimectomy.
