Only problem with that is that if it is the wires, replacing the module won't fix it. Might seem to for a while because you slightly cleaned up the wires by unplugging them once, but resealing them might be the proper fix. And cheaper. I'm sure there's a measurement for electrically testing the module, not looking that up right now.

Well I squeezed in the time to climb under there and take it off. It was a miracle that I didn't get any dirt in my eye! The pins looked really good but I cleaned them anyway... Qtip and rubbing alcohol.
Checked the ground wire and the insulation is damaged in one point but the wire is still good, not broken or even corroded.
Sand papered the grounding screw and connector/washer thing until shiny, wiped the frame and put it all back.
Cleared the code and started it up. For about 10 seconds I thought I had fixed it, since usually the wrench reappeared immediately after starting. But after about 10 seconds of idling, the wrench came back. I feel pretty confident that it's not a bad electrical connection, so now I guess I will order the part after all.

Good idea. From what I read, the module is aluminum and it’s mounted to the steel frame. You get some water and salt in there and it galvanic corrodes. Once you take it off you’ll see the corrosion.

I read that as well, but I think that's for trucks up to 2008. In 2009 I think they changed it to all plastic design, and the shape changed too. When I had it off it was all plastic and so there was no corrosion.

They actually changed the way they mounted it .. the backside was potted metal and it sat against the steel frame rail and corroded.. The new replacement version has plastic stand offs that come with it.

Yeah from what I've seen, the replacements for the old style come with stand offs now, but for 2009 and later, it's a different part and shape altogether.

I've just replaced the fuel pump control module ($127 with taxes) and cleared the codes. Started the truck and waited with abated breath... 30 seconds later the wrench reappeared.
Switched it off, got out and back in, started again four times. The first 2 times it took 30 seconds, after that only 5 seconds to reappear.
Cleared code again and at the next start it was back after 30 seconds.
I'm sad.

I like to be thorough, so I cleared the code and reinstalled the original fuel pump control module. Started the engine and it took 30 seconds to get the wrench icon back. If you ask me they are both doing the same thing, so it must not be the module.
