Where's my 36-Gallon tank?

http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2011/05...st-pickup.html This link is to an interesting article that was posted on this sight a couple of years ago. What is interesting is that by slowly filling the tank they were able to fit 36 gallons of fuel. First I don't recommend doing this because the extra room in the tank is for expansion as well as vapors but with that said I still thought it was pretty cool that they were able to squezze 10 more gallons in a 26 gallon tank.

I have this exact same issue. 26 gallons filled when near empty, sticker says 36 gallon tank, which I certainly paid for. What the hell.

Measure the tank. A 36 gal tank is a little over 8300 cubic inches.

I read it. So people with 36 gallon tanks need to wait until the computer decides to let you fill more than 26 gallons? How can that make sense? Why 26, why not 28, or 24, or 9? I drove it down to 11 miles remaining, and filed 26. You're saying there's ten more gallons in this tank, but I just need to be patient?
This is lunacy.

lol. Wow. Re read the post. The computer doesn't dictate the amount of fuel going into the tank. It dictates the MTE.

If I (supposedly) have a 36 gallon tank, which is near empty, and I go to the gas station and the pump stops pumping at 26 gallons, what do you think is the reason I can't pump those last ten gallons?

The reason is you still have 10 gallons left (seems obvious). Problem is that the fuel tank is a horizontal tank, not a vertical one. So even though you may have 33% left, it might only be a few inches deep. If you were to drive/park on a hill, theres a chance you would suck air and kill the engine. Long story short, yes the tank holds 36 gallons, and no you cannot ever use all of it before refueling. I believe I've gotten 28 gallons in mine, but never broke 30.
