Whats the real deal with the oil life monitor
'12 XLT ecoboost. When I scroll trough the computer menu, the first option I believe is Oil Life displayed in a percentage. I'm at 43%. I'm now at 16000km's. Last and only ever oil change was at 8000km's since new.
What does this "oil life" really mean? Can I just drive it until its down to 5% or so and then get an oil change?
What does the oil life monitor sensor?
Manual says to not exceed 16,000km or 1 year
Seems like a lot!

My last oil change ran down to 5% and was about 9400 miles. Guess I could of went to 0% to a few more miles but did it at 9500.
From what I understand, it doesn't sample your oil but does calculations based on driving and temperatures to provide IOLM info.
Some might say that's too long but you are fully under warranty if you follow the IOLM. And since I only plan on keeping my truck for 3 yrs (shoot, already getting the itch for a raptor), no dealer is going to give me a better trade allowance because I changed the oil every 3k or 5k miles.

Funny though that the dealer put an oil change reminder sticker on the windshield that says I'm due April 2012 at 12,000km's.

Only reason I ignore the oil monitor is due to tire wear. I rotate every 5k miles to keep the noise down, so I just get an oil change at the same time. It's only $50 at my local dealer, so why not.
If I didn't have aggressive tires, I'd go the whole 10k. Sending a oil sample to Blackstone Labs can be quite informative. I learned I could go 15k miles on non-synthetic Delo in my '03 Cummins.
I also learned that my DRZ400 shears oil quite quickly. 10w40 turns to 10w30 in less than 1000 miles. That thing requires 1k oil change intervals, even though the book says 3000 miles.
It all depends on the vehicle and operating conditions, but most times you can go way farther on an oil change than most people will tell you.
