I grabbed here and pulled out, towards me.
Then I grabbed here as well, and gave a quick tug
Now with the panel completely off, you can see back there, I have nothing. In the background you can see the dash board frame.

2011 XLT Screw 5.0 no climate control and i see the same thing you are seeing, some sort of electronics. I'll take mine of later and see.

I doubt it is a microphone. It looks nothing like one and.... my mic is up by the sunglass holder.

The seatbelt/chime speaker is attached to the gauge cluster so it can't be that. I also have nothing back there. I do know that if you have the upgraded HVAC it is the auto sensor.
You would have to pull it and look for yourself. Easy to do.
