Hmmm. I have heard that you need to run the manufacturers recommended octane only. Too little yields poor performance, and the same goes with too much octane. However, I do beleive that you may be better off in different climates running a plus 1 over mfg recommended octane. Also, try and find fuel with less ethanol maybe.

I've run 89 octane from time to time. When I have gas points from the local grocery store. It seems like I get better mileage. The mpg calculator in the display says I get 1.5 mpg's better, when I use it. But I've never done the actual math.

I've made this trip before in a 07 ram 1500 with the 5.7 and got an avg of 17 with 93 octane until I reached Virginia and filled up, must have got a bad tank of gas only got 7 mpg. Just checking to c if this Ecoboost runs better on 87 for long trips. I'll try a few diff octanes on the way down so I'll know for the return trip.

Same setup as you, 2011 EB screw 3.73. On long trips I just run 87 unless I'm towing, then I will throw 89 in there. Have a safe trip.

All you are doing is increasing the knock index when switching to higher octane allowing for less pinging/detonation for higher performance engines etc at different temps etc. Your not going to gain any additional power or MPGS. 1.5 mpg better, no chance in hell.

the oxygenation level is what provides the explosive power in such fuels as VP etc, those fuels will only have a knock index of 89-91

+1

higher octane fuel contains no more BTUs of energy than regular, therefore the same amount of fuel will be required to do a given amount of work.
