Any suggestions for brand name for vent shades? What about some good protective mud guards/mud flaps? And last, but not least; is the front hood protective shield (bug guard) effective? If so, what brand for it?

I'm actually looking at all 3 of those items myself.

Weathertech sells all of them. I have their digital fit liners. That said, their stuff tends to be more expensive.

For the bug guard I'm pretty sure I'll go with weathertech.

For the vent shades I'm leaning towards EGR slimlines:

For the mudflaps I like the no-drill install of the Weathertechs, but I've been looking at the Husky mudflaps as well.

I realize it's not a solid answer, but it shows you what I'm thinking anyway...

 

Weathertech in-channel mounted vent visors. Easy to install, no tape on the paint required.

Mud flaps- I went with Husky, and painted them with plastic specific paint to somewhat match the truck. A little tricky to install on the rear, you need to remove the rear tires and use a couple spacers (washers) between the 2 layers of metal. Easy to do, you'll see once you have to do that.

Bugger- I bought the dealer one, I think its Weathertech as well. Smoked to match the vent visors. Easy to install once the nuts are off the grill and you figure out where it mounts too. Don't overtighten and crack the bugger!

not to hijack or anything but... Sean do you have any problems with the in channel visors i had a set of EGR in channels on my old Ranger and they were really tight pressed in there the motor seemed to struggle to roll up sometimes. They burnt the power window motor out in about 2 years so I have been reluctant to do the in channels again but really dont want to do the tape ons.

 

I had the same problem as you with my previous truck. They caused the glass to be too tight at the top causing the motor to really struggle for the last 1/2 inch. The in channel visors also scratched the crap out of my glass at the top. I will NEVER get in channel visor again.

I do not have issues with the in channels at all. No scratching, no burnt motors, no issues with the windows going up. I think they need to be installed perfectly- put into the channel, install the clips properly to guide the window up and there you go.

on my 07 f-150 had to remove ford would not replace the window regulator do to the in channel vent shades plus it allways sounded like the
window was just a bit down.
on my 09 ranger i have had three motors put in the passenger side door and only a relay on the driver side door but there to always sounds like windows down at freeway speeds
my work van 2008 E-350 i did the in channels and striped the crank gear and there not power
so with my truck ill do the tape on ones and save me some trouble down the line

I have the weathertech vent shades and highly recommend them as well.

 

I went with the Ford Factory Mudflaps and AVS Seamless Ventvisors, and a AVS Aeroskin for the hood.
