Default VCT Actuator

I have a 2014 F-150 XLT Supercab with the 3.7 V6. I have noticed what I would describe as a rattling sound that only happens under very light throttle. To me it sounds like a aluminum heat shield ratttling or something similar. I had it in for State inspection at the local Ford dealer and at first they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. Later they said they heard it and diagnosed it as needing the VCT Actuator replaced. Quote was for $3300 which was almost all labor.

Anyone know anything about a VCT Actuator and if this makes any sense. I'm thinking I need to take it to a different dealer for a second opinion. Any thoughts?

I believe replacing the VCTs on the V6s is essentially doing a whole timing job. But, that still seems high even if including all the timing components. That's how dealers roll.

Certainly wouldn't go down that road based on a little noise.

I don’t know if that’s the Phasors on the gears that affect timing as those will start making noise at some point. My front cover was leaking and was covered under an extended warranty from Ford so I paid 2200 just in parts with only 1 hr of labor since front cover was off already . Timing chain( big heavy chain) , replaced both phasors/gears , guides and guide pushers that help keep chain running smooth. I’ve heard those Phasors start sounding like a diesel at some point but not sure how long that takes. Does it go away once engine is warm? 3300 isn’t bad if it’s for the parts I mentioned ( chain/Phasors-gears/guides/pushers and labor) sounds like variable cam timing. How many miles on truck? If it’s in great shape and all maintenance was done on rear end /transmission etc plugs etc, guess it’s up to you. You could purchase an extended warranty from Ford -premium one of course then maybe it would be covered at another dealer? The turbo supply and return coolant lines leak too and that’s a costly labors issue and mine were covered till
thwy finally fixed it correctly.
