Default Using oil...

My truck has used a little over 1/2 quart after 2400 miles... anyone else have the same result? I will keep an eye on this: hopefully it is just a "break-in" issue. I have examined the engine for leaks and there are none.

I have had several new vehicles, and none of them have used this much oil before the first oil change...

My buddy told me that his 04 and his 06 both used a little bit of oil as you are seeing. I don't have that many miles on mine yet so I don't know for sure. That's something I will keep an eye on.

This is not an uncommon occurance. It could use up to about 3/4qt between oil changes. Nothing to worry about.

You'll find oil consumption varies from truck to truck. My ole '05 Lariat sucked down about 2 qts between oil changes (5k mile intervals), the ole '07 wasn't an oil burner and my '09 so far doesn't appear to be one either.

I'm not sure what Ford says is 'normal' oil consumption. Keep an eye on it.

I do not believe that there is a set "normal standard" but I do know that the usage of oil is something that alot of people see in a new engine and it throws up a huge red flag. It is a normal SOP for new style engines to use oil. Try explaining to a gentleman who just spent $65k on a brand new XC90 V8 R-Design that when he checks his oil on gas fillups, that seeing it being a little lower each time is normal ops. I could go into how these new modular engines are what is affectionately know as "low friction" (weird since across the board, friction is a bad thing) and how the pistons are marginally smaller when cold (hence the diesel truck sound we tend to get on cold starts) and they are designed to expand and contract to reduce metal on metal contact on cold starts. I will spare you the long drawn out specifics, just know that it is normal.

I've noticed mine to blow a lil blue smoke out the tail pipe when I start it. Very attractive when all my buddy's are die hard Chevy fans, and they point and laugh and say, "look you paid 35K for that with less then 2,000 miles on it and my 1500 GMC gots 120,000 miles on it and dont do that"

Be sure to let them know who will be the last one standing when all they have left is the motor after the rest of truck has rusted and dried into dust. Let them laugh. Theyre just jealous

Default <NORMAL> Oil Consumption

Reading thru many of the major gearhead mags, it's not unusual for the modern engines to consume more oil than us ol' guys are used to. I'm guessing its a function of modern engine design and the low viscosity 5W-20 oils that are spec'd for fuel economy.

The figure that most articles use as the breakpoint for "normal" usage is one qt/1000 miles. Believe it or not, the general rule for dealer intervention (i.e., engine rebuild/replacement) on oil consumption in a vehicle under warranty is about one qt/300 miles!

Mine blew blue a couple of times. Rings are seating. Nothing to worry about.

My 5.4 has about 2,700 miles now and the oil level is fine.
