So have I, but I'm pretty sure all the negative things I've heard were based on their conventional oils. I've always heard that anything made from Pennsylvania crude was gritty and abrasive. Hopefully that doesn't translate into their fully synthetic line of motor oil that we're talking about here.

I can actually feel a performance and smoothness difference on penz, that I don't feel on any other oil
Right.

I've always bought whatever name brand oil was least expensive. Never had issues despite multiple vehicles over 100k miles. Never used synthetic once.

I've heard that too but over at Bob Is The Oil Guy (oil nerd site), regular Pennzoil Yellow Bottle is highly regarded as a conventional oil. It's supposed to have great cleaning properties and a great formulation. That's about my extent of knowledge about it.

I'm more of a dealer change oil or buy a good synthetic and a Ford filter since I drive Fords. Seems to be working for me.

Can't go wrong with either.

Pennzoil Ultra is good because it has the lowest volatility of any synthetic oil.

But its increasingly difficult to find it in walmart.

Yeah. I think they are re-releasing it or that's what I remember reading at BITOG. I guess I got lucky because both of the local Wal-Marts carry it.

I'm a huge fan of bobisthoilguy.com and spent a lot of time researching.

Up here in Canadistan oil is rediculously expensive, so when Pennzoil Platinum went on sale at walmart for $20 a jug I picked up a bunch. I then brought my work car home and changed the oil (police car). I punished that oil for 11 000km. Adding up the idling hours, it was the equivalent of about 13 000km on the oil. And I mean PUNISHED.

I took a proper sample and sent it to Blackstone labs for a used oil analysis. It came back with flying colours, lots of active ingredient left and they recommended that if I wanted to, I could have pushed the oil further. Wear on the engine was within tolerances for synthetic oil.

That being the story, I have no problem waiting for it to go on sale, and putting it in the F150. I don't really need the higher quality oils because i don't push the truck to those kind of tolerances. I don't punish it, obviously because I own it. And I feel good that I can get it on sale once a year and I stock up.

In summary, if you're going to change the oil early, and you aren't in the extreme heat or doing short trips with lack of reaching operating temperature, you won't hit the late stages/breaking points of the oil, where the differences in quality are eventually seen. Save the money. It's good oil.

Possibly. the Pennzoil plat. here is in a redesigned jug, so maybe the ultra will come back.

the ULTRA that was left over in the walmart stores here was from mid 2013.
