Did you try using the voice commands? I can't see mine in the regular device menu but if I use my steering wheel controls and say "USB 2" it recognizes and plays. It's also now set as my default music player with my hard drive hooked up so automatically starts playing my tunage.

Is your iPod FAT32 formatted? I had some issues, still seems kinda buggy. But I formatted a thumb drive FAT32 and it worked fine. I also pulled the Sync fuse to reboot it. Found an old laptop hard drive, bought a case for it, formatted properly and loaded it up with . mp3 files and it works about 70% of the time. At this point, either Sync is buggy or the HD is. However, USB always works, USB2, so-so.

Try another cable. Some may only work for charging.

Is your IPod updated? Mine did the same thing when I first got the truck but I fiddled with it and finally got it to work but I can't remember what I did exactly. Also try restarting your iPod and plug it in with the truck already running after the iPod has restarted. Good luck!!

Try a different cable. As jjrose2006 mentioned, some cables are for charging only and don't pass data. You definitely don't need a special cable. I've done this mod on my truck and a friends truck, and it works perfectly. We got his cable at Radio Shack.

The other thing is - the SYNC system can get buggy if you have something plugged into USB and USB2 at the same time. If that's your case, disconnect whatever is in USB and try resetting your SYNC (pull the fuse).
