Default Tire Question

Sorry for the redundant questions, guys. Again, I'm coming from a diesel, that would boil 40's if it had to. I'm really wanting to do a 2.5" front, and rear block on my '14 STX with a 5.0 and 3.55's. I'd like to step up to a 33ish AT tire. I was considering Nitto terra's in 305/55. but PAW PAW was telling me how heavy they are. It seems Nitto offers the LT305/55/20, and a 305/55/20 XL, different prices too...would one be a lighter tire?
If I'm not mistaken, a 285/65/20 would be damn near a 33" tire, no? Anyone run this size, on a 2.5" leveling kit?
I don't care much if I lose an MPG or so, I just don't want the truck to be a total dog. What is general concensus, are 33's going to make the 5.0 a slug, or is nothing a good tune can't make back up?
Thanks all.
Pat

Stock the truck comes with 32's, (assuming 4x4) so moving up an inch to 33's you will barely (if at all) notice a difference. Especially considering you are running 3.55''s, i'd only worry if you had 3.15's.

As for the LT305/55/20 vs the 305/55/20XL, the LT means it is a heavier tire with a thicker sidewall, and "XL" means it is a "P" rated tire so a thinner sidewall which is inherently lighter. Good luck!

The XL tires are kind of in between the LT and P rated ones. A good tuner may get some performance and mileage back with the larger and heavier tires. Best I could do was a little over 17 mpg on the highway with the 305's which I guess isn't bad considering the weight of these truck's. Stock tires are around 45 lbs ea and the LT305's are close to 70 lbs.

I did the 2.5" front and 1.5" rear leaf on my 2011 SCREW and went up to a 34" on the stock rims.. 295/70/18 I still haven't got a tune for the big change, so lost about 60+ miles per tank, average about 15/mpg now vs around 18.5mpg on the stock tires..
But def love the look of the truck now. Wouldn't change a thing besides getting the tune ASAP.

Thanks again for the input, guys. Like I said, this is kind of a whole new world to me again. I just dont want to regret my decision. I remember losing 2-3 mpg when I went from BFG at's in 315/70-17, to 35" Toyo mt's. That was a pretty substantial drop on a truck that already got terrible mileage.

Yea I knew I would lose some also, but didn't do all my homework before buying and installing mine.. my focus was to see what the largest tire I could fit on the stock rims with a 2.5" leveling kit on the truck..

Now I have to save to get a tuner to recalibrate the revs which should adjust the speedo also..

That's another thing I certainly want to do. Not necessarily for power, as i know these things don't respond like eco's or diesels do, to a tune. I'd just like to correct my speedo once i do the lift and tires, and maybe tighten up the trans a bit.

Yep, im in the same boat.. but if my research is correct, I plan on making a few more mods to the truck before I get the tuner so I don't have to tune after each mod...
