It is when you don't wax or use Fluid Film in the bottom seam.

My 02' SuperCrew rusted at the bottom of the tailgate as I did not wax that area enough. I now use Fluid Film on just about every seam on the truck and spray it into the rocker panels as well. So far, so good. The oily film has prevented any moisture in the seams and crevices from forming any kind of rust.

Yep common, like above stated, try some protection, or I run por-15 over it every year.

I spray the living snot out of mine with fluid film, I bought the sprayer kit from Kellsport. I do all under the truck, inside the framerails, all the suspension, backs of the bumpers, everything. Pretty much everything except the engine and the exhaust. It looks greasy as hell underneath, but there isn't a speck of rust!

this stuff is great! I bought the kit from Kellsport as well. Worth the effort to spray the truck completely each year.

I'd look for a used tailgate that isn't rusted. If it's already started it just keep rusting away.

My 2008 has no rust. But I too keep the seam at the very bottom clean and well coated in the winter.

I live in Phoenix and no rust on the 04 that I had or the 11 that I have now. I have no frame of reference as nothing rusts here but I always thought these tailgates were aluminum... learn something new everyday.
