Default Tailgate replacement opinion

Hello all,

Well, my wife backed into a cast-iron mailbox. Yes, it was really my wife. Punctured the tailgate, as well as a large dent. Mailbox won this battle.

I've searched and searched, and there's some great information on here about how to remove the tailgate, etc., and I'll certainly be using that info. My question is, what would you do if you were me? The truck is a 2011 Lariat with a step tailgate. The options that I can see are take to Ford to get the OEM replacement (my insurance deductible is 1000). If I do this, do you think I could get any money for the scraps of this damaged tailgate, since it has the step in it? On the other hand, I could try to dig something up on Craigslist or the Bay, but I've checked some online used part databases and there's nothing available anywhere near me right now. I don't really want to wait too long.

Just looking for some opinions from those wiser than myself in this area. What would you do? Thanks a lot everyone.

I'd probably bite the bullet and get a new one, but maybe without the step to keep the cost down.

I'd find used and pay out of pocket!

A new tailgate from Ford will come bare. You will have to transfer all the hardware and step to the new one. You might check used, but tailgates with a step are in high demand and thieves love to steal them. If you by chance find one, save your old one for the parts. Parts for the step are expensive.

Thanks a lot everyone. Right now I'm leaning towards the new OEM replacement, but I think I'll sit down and do another local search tonight for used ones just in case. Ideal would be to pick up a used one, in my paint color, and then sell the parts from my damaged one too. That's too much to ask for though. Thanks again.

Contact Steve at Tasca, there is a post here where he gives parts 10% over cost.
