Default Switch to Full Synthetic = New Turbo

I was always told when you buy a used ride that comes with a warranty, change the oil to full synthetic. This will make it leak if its going to (some say it's a myth).

I came up on my first 3000 mile oil change and put 5w30 full synthetic in. About 15 miles later, I had it idling outside. When I walked out the door, I could smell burning oil and also inside cab. Before the oil change there was no smell and I didn't spill. Checked things and the turbo was wet.

Took it in and told them "my truck smells like oil burning and I know where its leaking". He asked "from where?" I said "I'm not telling cuz I don't now if it's the only leak, if you can't find it come get me" A while later he comes back and said the tech checked all the known problem areas for leaks while it was in the air and found nothing. I told him the left turbo was leaking and you could see it from the top. He went and told the tech. He came back shortly and said the tech found it and told him the turbo needed to be replaced.

I'd guess the leak was already there the synthetic oil made it more obvious.

I'd be scared to let that same tech change the turbo if he could not track down an oil leak IMO

Synthetic oil isn't going to cause a turbo to fail.

no, it won't cause a fail. The synthetic will allow a leak to be found easier than if you use conventional, simply by the lighter weight oil. Basic physics
