Suspension Rant
So my 2010 f150 5.4 Xlt has 19k miles. I have already had my entire right rear leaf springs replaced under warranty around 15k because they determined that one of them was cracked. It was making an awful clunking noise whenever the truck rocked to the left or right through a turn. I could easily reproduce it on the right side by wobbling the truck back and forth Well the clunking has started again and my dealer isn't going to be able to work me in before the weekend so I have to wait until after spring break to even get it looked at. I'm heading to florida on saturday. If the leaf spring were to be cracked again, would this pose a safety issue for my family and I?
I would think if the LS is cracked that would be a major saftey issue. Are they sure? I think something like that would be very, very rare. Many have reported (myself included) that the rear leafs can be noisy. I usually jack up the back, spray some litihum grease and it takes care of things for a few months.
Yeah skupko, I have read alot of the posts about some people having noisy leaf springs. Half of me worries about it, and the other half thinks that the service manager thinks I know nothing about vehicles and just dumbed it down to "the spring is cracked". Either way this dealer has been very good to me so far. It just makes me mad because it is so noisy. I will probably try the lithium grease thing sometime next week whenever I get the chance.
Yes if a leaf is cracked it could slide over enough to go into the sidewall of your tire which would definitely cause a blow out. It's one of the first things motor carrier enforcement officers check when they pull over big rigs.
My front shocks makes a bad sound when I turn sharp into my drive way bump that little curb where the driveway meets the road. I need to take it to Ford. Do you think they will give me credit toward upgraded shocks?
Look at it yourself - if the spring is cracked bad enough to make sounds like that, you should be able to see the cracks. Crawl under the truck and shine the flashlight on the springs and look for cracks. If it's cracked bad enough to make a noise like that, it should be very obvious.
Cracked springs can be very dangerous - if the spring fails entirely, you could definitely have a loss of control

Mine does the same thing (clunk on slow left turn). I took it in about 9000 miles ago and they greased the springs. It didn't do a dang thing! I haven't taken a close look at the springs to see if they are cracked or not. I guess I have gotten used to it. It is kinda annoying at times though!
