Suggestions for a Secuity System
Hey all, I'm new to this forum and I just purchased my first truck. Let me apologize in advance for my ignorance as my question may seem silly to many of you.
Although not ideal I find that there are occasions that I must leave valuables in the cab and/or the bed of the truck (all aluminum RetraxPro cover with lock). Im looking for a oneway remote as opposed to two way as I've learned that two ways eat batteries too quickly for my liking.
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

You just want to add a shock sensor?

There are many shops that are certified to install remote starters and alarms without voiding your warranty, though I would check first because if you pick the wrong one and have a problem you may void it. I have had a remote start in every vehicle I have ever bought in the last 12 years and have never once had any problems with the wiring or any other issues. If you have a reputable shop instal it there shouldnt be a problem, its not like its rocket science. Splice a few wires, not to hard unless you splice the wrong ones! I will never own a vehicle without a remote start, and so far factory remote starts are severely lacking compared to the aftermarket competition, so its a no brainer for me, aftermarket all the way.

Remote start aside, IMO alarms are unnecessary. At least to prevent vehicle theft due to the integrated key electronics. If a crackhead wants your iPod it's a smash and grab. The car I had previous to this awesome Ford was an X5. My rear window was smashed and they tried to grab a case of ammo. It was way too heavy to drag over the broken glass so they left. They were gone by the time I made it out front.
My bike has more electronics than you would think. GPS based computer, the crankset has a power meter with strain gauges built in. If I can't ride fast I need to know why...
I agree with Norcal in regards to aftermarket alarms versus the factory one.
A truly determined, capable and properly equipped thief will be able to take ANY car they so set their sights on, alarm or not, so alarms are really just a deterrent for the "average" thief. In which case, the factory security system would be sufficient.
In most cases, people tend to ignore triggered car alarms since there have been way too many false ones that we've become indifferent to them.
However, if plinking down some Bejamin's on some really cool aftermarket alarm systems gives you that peace-of-mind you need, then by all means, knock yourself out!
I believe the most important concern to address is ensuring you have enough insurance to cover any loss and damage from theft, to include any aftermarket additions and personal property in the vehicle.

My old man got an aftermarket remote start on his 2010 silverado and has complained ever since. I got the alarm/ remote start on my platinum and couldn't be happier. You can adjust the shock sensors and its was easy to install and works great. I will admit the remote start from my phone would be awesome but mine still works from a long way.
