Stx or Lariat?
Not to give a completely useless answer, but it all depends on what you're looking for in a truck. Lariat is more plush and luxury but can require more effort in cleaning, whereas the STX is more basic and functional, but can be easier to keep clean, especially with the vinyl floor. Both have their place and are better in their own way. You need to decided which fits your desires (and your pocketbook) best.
Get an STX with the power and drivers packages(steering wheel controls and sync most specifically) you will have more front seat room without the center console and none of that chrome nonsense on the outside(all color coded trim and bumpers), I like to say my STX is like a poor man's FX4...(this message was not intended to offend those who prefer the chrome stuff on their trucks

get the platinum edition and be a little diff. ford has about 6k in rebates. when i drive mines, i feel like I driving a lexus (best car) and F150 (best truck) and you only live once.
I had a 2005 Lariat and I can say that if you are looking for luxury pamperings (leather, heated/cooled seats, power everything, rear park assist, rear camera, navigation, etc.) its the way to go. Its only roughly $7-8k more than an STX with power options but the STX wont have nav, park assist, heated/cooled seats, etc. You'd spend more than that adding things to the STX if you so decided that you could not live without them... when you compare supercab to supercab prices.
I'd say that an STX is a good choice now that you can essentially get an STX with the same interior as an XLT. Back in 2005, an STX was a no frills truck with some body styling stuff. No power anything, no tachometer (more annoying that you'd think), vynil floors, etc. Now though, they're a different breed.

Dude your deffinitly skipping the one in the middle which is the XLT. I like to think of the trucks as the STX is a lower version of the FX4 (obviously still very different but look the same on the outside) whereas the XLT is a lower version of say a Lariat. You really need to just figure out what your budget is and what size cab you want. I opted for the FX4. I liked the look of the STX/FX4, wanted something that had thick cloth seats (dark so if they did stain you really cant see it, my XLT was horrible about stains) same thing with the dash and interior, if it was dirty you didnt notice right away. But I also really liked the locker and center consol. So I opted for the luxury off road truck

I have the charcoal interior in my 08 FX4. I really can't understand why Ford puts light colored interiors in the F series truck. My wifes Expedition has a tan interior. She keeps it as clean as she can but you know the story. Even if you don't use the truck in a construction site there is always the friend who asks for help in moving or pulling out a tree stump. The tan interior does not work for me.
if you just want a truck for "occasional" use and hauling, get the Lariat. if you want a truck to use, get the STX or even the XLT. like stated above, the XLT is a cheaper version of the Lariat without some of the bells and whistles. i opted for the XLT, and i couldn't be happier. i like chrome on a truck, thats the reason i didn't get an STX. no offense to anyone who doesn't like chrome...
