Spark plug socket size
The other night I tried to pull a spark plug from my 2010 F150 5.4 motor. However, my 9/16 spark plug socket (OTC 6900, specifically for the 3V 5.4 motor) would not fit? I used this wrench on my old 05 truck without issue. I know the newer trucks use the sp509 instead of the sp515 but I thought they were the same wrench size? I didn't have my deep socket set handy to try another size but it wouldn't have mattered because I believe the spark plug socket must be "thin wall" to fit in the tube. I have new spark plugs on order, what size socket do I need to order to go with the sp509? Or maybe some other brand spark plugs are in the truck with only 46k miles on the clock, would seem strange.
I pulled the front passenger side plug today, 9/16 fit but it was very snug. Plugs looked like the threads were rusty and it really creaked coming out. Only 46k miles on the truck, they are Sp509 plugs. I put some anti seize on the plug and reinstalled since my new plugs and cops won't be here till the end of the week and I need to drive the truck. I pulled the throttle body to clean it while I was in there and it was spotless, surprisingly.
I did all the plugs and cops last night, there were some small rocks in one of the spark plug holes that prevented the socket from connecting. I had to use compressed air, a vacuum, and bicycle spoke bent into a small hook to dislodge a stubborn pebble from around the spark plug. If that had fallen into the motor I don't even want to think about the damage it would have caused. No performance change after new plugs and cops though, still get a shudder at 17-19mph when accelerating and at 37-39 on deceleration. Off to the dealer next for a transmission software update.
The SP509's on my 2008 Expedition (with brown COPS) were a bit rusty but came out with a 9/16 socket. I had to use a rubber hose over the end to pull it out and always use one to start the new plug. I used anti-seize base on the corrosion on the old set, always blow the hole out before removing plug, good insurance.

That's why I put the anti seize on as well. With only 46k miles, the plugs threads were very rusted and difficult to remove/turn, I was afraid they would break. I already had a tube of it from my last 5.4 spark plug change on my old truck, no harm it making the plugs easier to remove for the next guy. And I've now got a spare set of COPS. They can fail without throwing a code, and were only 105 for a brand new set (AC Delco). I figured since it's kind of a pain to get to all the plugs and the cops had to be removed anyway, why not put new ones back in. So I paid 150 total for 8 new plugs and new COPS, which is less than the dealer would have charged for just the plugs (without labor).
