So how many miles should the oem shocks last?

118k on my 2010 Scab and Im wondering if I should replace them.

The bounce test works if they are completely worn out. None of mine are leaking, but Im wondering if new shocks will give me a smoother ride.

Sounds like you got your monies worth out of them. I've seen shocks go out at less then 30K miles. New ones front and rear should make a big difference in the ride. Good time for a set of Bilsteins or Rancho's that would firm up the ride and give you better handling.

I'll get scorched, but I'm a firm believer they are only good up to 30/35,000 miles.
The dealer just replaced the leaking rear shocks on mine a couple weeks ago .
I have 28,000 miles and there was a noticeable improvement right away.
On the flipside, the rears were 'leaking' and idk for how long. I only saw a couple drips on each shock.

I know I changed out the front struts (shock & spring) on my 2005 with just OEM's at 35,000 miles. I basically got one for free when I bought both.
At that low mileage the front end lifted 3/4 of an inch. So the factory spring sags pretty quickly. Again I remember a better overall ride after.
That's my 2 cents.

When I worked for a large outfit that did shocks and struts, every seminar I attended, and lots of customer experience put the mileage numbers at 25,000 miles for shocks, 85,000 for struts (TOPS!). I don't know where the coilover set ups on our trucks fit in there. All I do know is that I swapped out my OEMs at 900 miles (that's not a typo - 9-0-0 miles) Almost every OEM shock strut out there is junk when compared to a good aftermarket, plain and simple.

At 118K miles, yours were dead a long time ago, you just didn't notice because they (mostly) go bad so slowly. But even when they were new they were junk compared to aftermarkets. Get them changed out (don't cheap out) and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Stingray makes a great point in regards to the springs on top of the strut.
Aftermarket are stronger and provide a little bit of natural lift, except, for Monroe's 'quick strut' complete strut setup. I noticed the coilover has a smaller diameter.
What I mean about lift is, just a stronger spring itself. I'm not talking about adjustable coil overs.
I'm sure there are quite a few out there driving with broken springs and aren't aware of it.

He's also right about not noticing it... because it's such a slow degrade. You get used to it, without realizing until you put in a new set.
Then it all makes sense.

my fronts were toast when i got the truck with 44k miles on it. I didn't realize they were until I put bilstein 5100s on it and now the truck rides like a dream.

if it feels good dont worry about it. Mine was always noticeably rough, would slam over potholes and such, just generally a rough ride. I thought it was just the XLT trim had different springs or shocks that rode rough before i swapped em out.

if yours doesnt feel liek that theyre probably fine but you should still get some bilsteins to level it out, highly recommend

Or better yet..some rancho quick lift coil overs...this way you replace coil springs also and very easy to install. No spring compressor needed.

Well if I were to replace the shocks, id do a full coilover, and if I did a full coilover, id do the Boss coilovers. Everything I've read and every review ive seen, says these are awesome for the street queen who gets dirty every now and then. Plus the price is pretty sweet lol
