This actually happened to my garage. I have a two car garage with three people and four vehicles, so keeping them all in the garage isn't an option. The rule of thumb is first come-first served with the garage, so it happens that I (or they) park outside.

My G8 and truck were parked in the garage and my roommate's truck was in the street. They broke into his truck and opened the garage with the opener. It must have been kids, because they only took a case of beer I had sitting in the garage. They went through my car because the center console was open and the contents were strewn, but didn't take anything of value, really.

After that I changed the code on the garage, but it's not worth it to me to give up the automatic opener for the little bit of added security.

I think the point the op was getting at is the universal remote is built into the window visor and cannot be moved, hidden or taken out of the vehicle.

I stopped using mine and erased the code. I live in a "good area" which has been known to have garage thefts because there are often lots of valuable goodies hidden inside.

When I had my house alarm installed I had the garage doors wired into the system. Any time the garage doors are opened and the alarm is off, a sound comes through the alarm pad to let me know when the door is opened or just closed. If the alarm is set and the garage door opens I get a call from the alarm company with in 15 seconds and I let them know to call the police or someone is home and set off the alarm by accident.

If some one wants something bad enough they will try and steal it. I hope by having the alarm system they will think twice before trying to break into the house or garage.

I hang garage doors for a living and all of the ones we put in has a feature on the wall button (inside the garage by the house door usually) tht u can lock the remotes out with.... To the OP, i havent ever heard of anyone doing something like tht, seems like a lot of trouble for a "maybe" success. The garage door opener brand "Liftmaster" does a have a dongle u can plug in the motor and download the app on ur smartphone so u can lock the remotes or open the door or whatever....

Yep it's happened and the worst of it is that the kids who are nomrally at the center of this aren't the problem, a case of beer or console change is one thing but the big problem is the smarter ones who use your remote to get in the garage, close the door and then gain access to the house through the man door.

Anyway, locking out the garage door opener is a great idea as is the timer - I never thought of that - it minimizes our exposure anyway.

So it appears no one knows about a mod for wiring the opener to the ignition. I shall look around a bit.

If you can trace the wires, it should actually be a fairly simple mod. Clip the 12V always hot wire and tap into the accessory power wire which is hot only when the key switch is turned on.

And as soon as u clip tht wire, ur warranty goes out the window lol unless u dont care about buying a new motor if a part goes bad under warranty or u have an older motor

Agreed. If I was worried about it, I would just use the lock out feature on my opener.

It's actually not a dongle but a little piece of hardware that just has an Ethernet jack that you connect to your router.

Why do you even have it programed if you don't park inside? Lol!
