Default Rusty lugs

Washed the truck the other day and noticed the lugs had spots of rust on them. These are '12 FX4 20's. Anyone else getting the same thing?

Are they O.E.M. or with the stainless covers or after mkt chrome plated Which will rust if the chrome is chipped or scratched by a poor fitting wrench?

They're the OEM hyper silver colored lugs.

If that is a concern, you might not want to ever crawl under the truck!! Ever.

Have you had your wheels rotated by other than the Ford dealer? A careless person with an air wrench can wreak havoc with the chrome or stainless covering on any wheel lug......On the other hand, Ford's anti-rust warranty should cover those, so that's what I would try first.

Believe me that's on the list. If the truck is sitting in the driveway and I pull in with the car it makes me cringe seeing how bad the rear axle is after a yr. Por15 or KSB will be coming soon to fix that up.

I've rotated and had a buddy mount new tires. Nothing out of the ordinary. Next rotation is coming up soon. I usually clean the wheels real good front and back, clay, polish and Collinite them. While I have the wheels off I'll try and clean them up good before seeing what the dealer says.

I have the same thing on my '12 FX4 w/20's, I rotated my tires and inspected for inner sidewall cracks a few times last year removing/installing them with a hand wrench and had no issues, used Torque wrench etc..took it to selling dealer to have the cracking Pirelli's replaced in November under Pirelli warranty (8k miles) and since then they (oem exposed lug nuts) are rusty looking and look bad @ 12k miles (not to mention a 2" chip/mark they put on face of one rim) That rusting didn't start right away, but now it is worse every time I look at them (ALL 24 of them). Will try to post a few pics.

While you're at it, don't forget to put anti-seize on the wheel studs, back of rim mounting flanges, and center axle hubs.
Trust me you won't regret it. *It's the 1st thing I usually do after purchasing a vehicle.

Never thought of that, sounds like a good tip.
