Default Removing chrome from Grill

Im getting a chrome grill soon and I would like to strip it so I can paint it. Anyone do this yet, what is the best way? Or any other suggestions.

  1. you cannot remove the chrome from the grille. *It's plated.
  2. good surface prep'
    • use a degreasing/dewaxing/depolish, etc. solvent BEFORE doing any sanding.
    • scuff the surface with sand paper.
    • go over the surfaces again with the dewaxing solvent.
  3. spray an etching primer.
  4. wet-sand.
  5. paint.

You can remove it with industrial oven cleaner or brake fluid. Members on here have done it. I wouldn't. I would do this... https://www.f150forum.com/f116/how-paint-chrome-203305/

I've been wanting to get my chrome surround PTM my green gem, but 5 shops around my area said they won't do it. It's BS because I know its possible, but they are old school and set in their ways.

They probably turn that kind of stuff away because they can't guarantee their work and basically if they do it the paint definitely has a chance of failing customer gets mad and wants it redone or fixed . If someone asked while I was writing an estimate I would prob turn it down as well . (Unless it's mine) haha

I stripped the chrome off my 08 grille surround with a power washer. I don't know if the 09 grille is the same. My oem surround was just a plastic of some type with the chrome coating. I peeled a section with a blade to start and the rest came off with the power washer.

Ive got a brand new ptm surround if anyone wants it, I bought the 6 bar fx grill and it came with it but I was able to just reuse my current painted surround.
