Default Removing the caps on the mirrors

Hey I've got the normal (not tow) mirrors and was wanting to remove them and smooth them out and paint them to match my truck, or just put some other ones on there that are made to be painted.

My question is ... How do I remove the mirror cap without damaging it? Is there a trick to keep from breaking the clips or whatever? Thanks.

Which model truck do you have? If you have an XLT, STX or XL the mirror caps are not removeable.

it's and FX4, I figured they would be removable since F150's have some painted, some chrome and some black, surely they don't make different mirrors for each version. It looks like they just snap on there, but I don't want to break it taking it off.

Ok I found out how to remove the mirror caps, first you have to pop off the mirror glass, then remove 4 - t15 torx screws from the inside and remove the piece that holds the mirror glass, from there you can reach up under the housing and release the four clips that hold on the caps.

Thanks Twisty, I found it on another forum after your suggestion about the google thing

When I switched my chrome caps out I just used a flexible plastic putty knife and carefully pried them off. 10 minutes and they came off without a hitch.

Be careful removing the mirror as it breaks easily. Best start with the passenger mirror; it's $27 to replace vs. the driver's $150. Yes they are all removable and yes you can pry but may break the lock tabs. That's what I finally did as I wasn't going to reuse them.
