I bought a set of the black blanks to replace the orange reflectors on my mirrors...read a bunch of the posts here and sounded like they pry out fairly easy but didn't have much luck. Any tips/tricks/recommendations on popping out the mirror reflectors?

 

Remove the mirror and do it from the inside. You will break the tabs if you do it from the outside.

 

Get a thin/small flat head screw driver and carefully pry between the reflector and the side mirror on the curved side of the reflector. Basically all the way on the end of the reflector, on the curve side, is where to pry. I do it all the time to clean it out and clean across my LED's I installed inside my reflectors.

The tabs on the curved side are much shorter than the longer tab on the flat side of the reflector.

 

Put the LEDs in..... I did mine $30 bucks and they r awesome!!

As long as I'm pulling the mirrors...has anybody found a way to run heat to the mirrors? I hate that they always fog up now that weather is getting colder. There is obviously a power source to the mirrors for turn signal and power fold.

 

Easier to swap out the mirrors for heated ones, than to run heat to them.

 

Did platinums or lariats come with heated mirrors? I don't want the extended tow mirrors.

I believe the xlt's do to. I bought a set of heated, power, with the turn signal off of a member of this site. In the trades and sales section, He was swapping to tow mirrors, Then found the climate control with the defrost button on Ebay. I did a write up on it, if you end up going that route.

 

No need to remove the mirrors -- unnecessary work. As bcb97 said simply pry out the reflector the tabs won't break off -- I too have done this several times.

If you want to add heated mirrors and not replace the whole assembly then you would need to swap the mirrors ( glass ) which have the heat elements and terminals attached. Then you would need to run wires through the mirror assembly and splice into the appropriate wires at the wire harness in the door. Now , you would also need to tap into the appropriate wires to be able to switch the heaters on/off --- or swap out the climate control module with one that has the switch built in ( no locating and splicing wires ).

No, the standard XLT does not. As was the case with my truck -- just power adjust of the mirrors -- no reflectors -- no signal lights either.

I wanted to add the signal lights ( both front and back sides ) as well as puddle lamps ( which I was going to make my own anyway ) but, as I started pricing out the costs of the reflectors and the pop in signal lights it was expensive to purchase OEM stuff.
As luck would have it I came across someone locally selling off both power mirror assemblies from his 2 week old F150 after upgrading to tow mirrors. These have the reflectors , signals , heated and auto dimming --- got them for $80 each ( the planets were aligned that day ) so it was a no brainer.

This made my life a lot easier --installed the LED strips ( signal mod ) -- trimmed out the reflectors --- made up and installed the puddle lamps -- swapped out the mirror assemblies. Since the mirror assembly already had the majority of wiring this made things easy and neater to simply plug into the existing wire harness -- exception was the puddle lamps which was the only thing I had to splice and connect into the harnees for.
I'm thinking of biting the bullet and purchasing a replacent climate control module to activate the heated mirrors.
