Thanks for posting this. My girlfriend has an '01 escape so I'll have to look into this further.

Yeah ... funny about how my manager came in to work yesterday talking about how he couldn't find this 'clear oil' leak on his 2002 Explorer has developed. I did a search and came up with the same article. There's a detailed explanation on http://switchfires.com

A statement by Ford explained that “If parts are not available, Ford will instruct owners to park their vehicles outside until such time as parts become available.”
WTF???? After my last fiasco with solenoids, these people can be waiting a long time for the parts.

Ford, as well as other manufacturers, need to demand that suppliers get their act together. Many times we blame Ford or GM when it is the supplier's issue!

They have to reccommend you park it because they are liable if they don't tell you that for any safety hazard. I've heard they can be pretty slow at getting some parts in.

Manufacturers are still culpable because they pressure the suppliers to keep cost down as much as possible. So you get parts that will pass the initial QC checks, but as they age issues start to crop up.

Though an extra 10 cents per unit adds up when you're buying hundreds of thousands, or even a million of them, a recall like this eats into the alleged cost savings. Maybe one of these days a company will just figure out it isn't worth it trying to save that 10 cents on items like these that have the potential of causing fires.
