Default Rattle While Idling in Gear

I noticed in the past few weeks I am getting a very bad rattle while idling at a stop light. This rattle is only present when the truck is in gear, and vanishes the moment I accelerate or shift to neutral. It sounds like a tin can bouncing around and it appears to be coming from higher up in the engine compartment. However with the current weather I have not had the opportunity to investigate further.

Has anyone experienced this before and solved it without involving a professional?

I drive a 2011 Eco Boost 4x4 Screw with around 94k miles under its belt. Very few mods and none of them should affect performance or the engine/drivetrain.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Remove the ecoboost engine cover and see if there is something loose underneath it.

I'm here to help, EcoBoostJake. Have you had your dealer check this out recently? Please let me know; if you haven't already, I suggest scheduling an upcoming appointment for diagnosis using this.

Please keep me posted!

Likely a heat shield someplace.

i had a similar rattle on my 2013. i've got the 5.0 and they routed the transmission cooler lines over to the driver side and down along the oil pan to the radiator. at one spot, the metal lines were laying against the oil pan and when you would hit the right rpm it would cause the lines to "rattle" against the oil pan. i could get mine to do it at about 1000-1200 rpms while sitting in my driveway in gear with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. i would always hear the rattle in the drive through line just as i would give a little gas to move.

Thank you for all the information ladies and gentlemen! I will investigate this weekend let you know what I come up with.

As for the advice to have ford inspect the truck. I am outside of warranty and would rather avoid spending the big bucks to have a dealership fix it. That is before I exhaust all other options at least.

Thanks again!

Just wanted to give an update. I had a local mechanic look at the truck last week and they confirmed it was most likely a loose heat shield, however they were unable to locate the exact one that was causing this rattle. My local ford dealer wants to charge a diagnostic fee prior to looking, so I am waiting until the weather in Chicago warms up a bit so I can investigate a little more on my own.

The last time I had service done at the dealer it was more than twice what I would pay at the local shop. However it was fixed the first time and they loaned me a shoebox to get back and forth to work. Great service, but I would still rather avoid another $600+ repair for a minor annoying issue.

I will dig into the engine compartment in a month or two when I can feel my fingers while I work.

Thank you again for your advice,
