Quick Q on bed covers
Watching the video's on the Bakflip G2 and the Extang Solid websites, I was leaning heavily towrds the Bakflip as they are basicly the same as far as coverage, durability and fans, but I like that you can fold the Bakflip all the way back, among a couple others small things.
But then I noticed the Bakflip video doesnt mention a lock and the Extang does.
Now I know if someone wants something bad enough they are going to get it, but I have this image of someone just walking up, folding my Bakflip up and walking away with it.
The lock on the Extang may not be much but it would slow someone down a little and stop casual thieves from grabbing my expensive cover simply by folding it up and releasing a clamp or two.
So the question is,do the Bakflip trifold's in fact have a lock?

To release the G2 you have to pull a cable underneath the cover, so if you have your tailgate up and locked the average person cant just walk up and open it.
I feel pretty confident about the security of it, like what was said if someone wants in they will get in.

I recently purchased the Solid Fold because of the security issue. Both covers are very similar in design and price, but there is a significant difference in security.
The BakFlip does lock down and unlocks very easily, but it is that very feature that makes it (IMO) less secure than the Solid Fold. All that needs be done is to slip a coat hanger in the opening between the rubber seal of the cover/upper corner of the tailgate (where it meets the bed rail), hook the release cable on the underside of the cover and you are in.
The Solid Fold is less convenient to open (you have to physically unhook one spring-loaded lock each side) but this makes it more secure and harder to break into. Bearing in mind no cover is impervious to being forced open if enough time and/or force is used, the Solid Fold would take more effort and time.
Also, the Solid Fold sits on top of the bed rails and not in a track between the bed rails. This may have something to do with the weight limit for the Solid Fold panels being rated at 700 lbs, vs. 300 lbs. or so for the BakFlip. But as a result, the Solid Fold is visible from the side and the BakFlip sits flush and therefore out of sight. This is important to some people, but not to me. The black Solid Fold cover matches the color of the plastic bed rail caps and looks like it belongs there.
There are a couple of other differences in the way each cover folds and can be used, etc., but there are several good videos on You-Tube that highlight each. My input is just regarding the security issue. My truck bed is as secure as any car trunk and at 6.5 ft., it's a huge trunk. So far, I give my Solid Fold cover 10 out of 10 points. Worth the money.

You might also want to take a look at a Fold-A-Cover (and Advance Cover, they are virtually the same cover). Fold-A-Cover has locks on both the front and rear panels. Unlike a Bakflip, you can open just the front panel if you want to. Also, you don't have to open the tailgate to open the cover.

If you pull up strong enough on the corners of the BakFlip you will find it could really easily pop open. It's also a lot easier to fish something in to pull on the release string.
The Solid Fold doesn't have either of those problems and is more secure.
But I totally agree, if someone wants in they will probably find a way. I think the Solid Fold is more durable as a whole though by nature of the type of cover and that it sits on your rails vs inside them.
