Default PTM mirror caps

Hey guys..
I bought a set of all black tow mirrors for my truck finally. Im hoping to PTM the mirror cap. How do they pop off? I dont want to break any tabs and im worried about messing with the glass! Anyone just tape them off and paint? thanks!

When I added my PTM and installed the chrome caps, the caps SNAPPED on pretty hard. I suppose if you tried to pry the caps off from the side slowly you would have a 50/50 chance of success.

Good luck.

From my research you would want to buy caps made for painting.

You should be able to sand the texture off the black caps fairly easily

You can buy chrome mirror caps for just $25 shipped on Ebay that fit right over. I got a set and just plasti dipped incase I didn't like them. I would say that is your best bet.

Yes I know. But with a truck as nice as his, if he's going to do it shouldn't he just do it the right way first?

I'm not saying the other way will be sub par but if a body shop can't guarantee it wouldn't that be a good reason to at least think twice about it? (only know they can't because I asked both of mine and had another member mention it too)

you have to pop the glass off to get the cap off the right way.......yes you can PTM the stock caps, what we do is sand them w gray scotchbrite and then shoot them w bumper prime w the flex in it, the stuff is thick and fills the texture. Then shoot w single stage or base and clear, depends on ur needs..........good luck

Good to know. You said 'we' does that mean you work in a body shop? If so is this something you normally do and would say most body shops could do? I'm just curious because both of mine pretty much refused to touch the textured ones.

I went ahead and ordered the chrome caps for $45 shipped...figured it was easier than popping off the glass and risking breaking the mirror. Plus I won't have to deal with the texture issue. How much scuffing of the chrome cap needs to be done before paint? I plan on using a plastic adhesion promoter primer also
