Default Problem with power steering

I seem to be developing a problem on my 2011 5.0 XLT 4x4 Super crew

At lower speeds such as manoeuvring in a car park etc the steering occasionally goes heavy, this can literally just be for a moment or last a second or two.

Is this the early signs of the electric power steering system failing?

If I have time tomorrow I'll try and check with Forscan to see if there is a code but there is no light on the dash showing.

Thanks

Lower steering shaft binding - common issue

I sprayed mine down with some PB Blaster to prepare for future replacement, and the issue actually went away for the moment - still going to replace mine, sooner than later

Keep it clean, I have no doubt that if the shaft is binding it is not doing the expensive rack any good.

Thanks for the help.....

I've had a look at that, doesn't seem particularly gunked up but I have lubricated it to see if it helps.

There have been a number of complaints about the rack going out. It isn't bulletproof, it seems. Mostly it's because it's so expensive ($1200 for the part) and generally can't have parts replaced. Full replacement only unless you are very determined and capable.

This is exactly what happened prior to my steering rack going out for good. Do some research you might need a significant repair soon.

As long as you're not getting the dreaded 'Service Advancetrac' warning you might be OK

My engine came with the old school steering. A ford tech said be very thankful for it. Worst that happens is a weeping line or rarely a pump, not really expensive and quick to do. Usually plenty of warning.
He sees random EPAS failures in all years. Not cheap. And they can just happen at anytime. They do save gas though.

They are also fun to drive. I have family members with 'sport' versions of their sedans that are harder to steer than my 6500lb truck.
