Finally Finished!
Here is the finished product. I don't really like how the passenger side light turned out. The paint looks black, but you can tell where it didn't fully coat the little ridges. Can't really tell it unless you're right up on it, but had already siliconed it.
TIP! Spray paint is a little runny and thin. no way I was going to stick a straw in there and spray like someone else suggested. I can see that being a disaster. Just got some long stiff brushes and that worked on the taillight side, but I had go over it 3 times to coat it, and even then, not totally solid. (maybe it was the cheap wal-mart spray paint????)
Had to paint inside so the gray didn't show.........Ok mod, but not sure it was worth the time I put into it...

if I had to do it all over.....
I'd not use cheap spray paint.....maybe a little better quality like Rustoleum.....
I would have took more time filling in the silicone and smoothed it out better (I did paint over it black, so it blends in better)
i might end up buying the blacked out Harley OEM taillights and paint the edges on them. would look good on the Race Red. Gotta save up $117.04 for the pair though!
I definately know the snags I ran into on the stock ones, so I woudln't make the same mistakes twice!

Here are the stock XLT/XTR lights, stock HD/Raptor lights, then the painted edge version.

This is the mod most people started doing; throw a set of FX4/Harley Davidson/Raptor heads and tails on the truck for a little darker look, but then we had to paint the edges black. The clear lip doesn't look so bad on the regular tails, but the black tails with the little clear lip looks half-assed. It's especially noticable on a black or darker coloured truck. I've got a $1000 stainless steel exhaust system on my truck, a custom grill, custom decals, yadda yadda yet the mod that gets the most attention: "Heyyyy, those tail lights look good man!" haha. What a monumental pain in the ***, but definitely worth the effort.

Did you use Ford paint or just something from the hardware store?

I just did this and I have to say it was a pain. I probably should have trimmed the inside like everyone has done that might have help. I just finished smoking them and they turned out great! I have the Harley ones and just bought another set. I'm going to be selling one pair here soon so stay tuned. I don't plan to do this black painted edge on the next set just smoke them and those I'm going to keep and use.
Let me know if anyone needs more info on how to do this. It's not bad but I highly recommend trimming the insides like posted here. Also small brush and I also used black calking after and that helped too.
