Traction control on the newer trucks makes open diff's act as a LSD.

When the truck sense's wheel spin, it applies the brakes to that wheel. When that happens, the differential will apply the force to the other wheel(it has to go somewhere). Pretty much exactly what an LSD does, but in a different way.

I agree that LSD is a better option because electronics can fail, however, traction control is better than not with an open diff.

You might already have the electronic wheel spin control which will make it act like LSD, im not sure if its on all trucks or just certain trim levels, but to test it out just go to some grass or a dirt road and hammer it and see if they both spin, if they do you have the electronic version and wont have to worry about adding a real LSD.

Ok, so my truck has traction control as well as my LSD. How does that work if one wheel starts to spin? Does Ford program traction control differently on trucks with an LSD?

yes, trucks without the LSD get an additional separate traction control system called "electronic wheel spin control" Its not necessary on LSD equipped trucks.

What the heck. $35000+ on a truck and the 4x4 has an open rear end differential. Can anyone explain to me (or school me) on why they would put that on a 4wd. If you build it on Ford's website and click the 3.55 rear end with non lsd it actually upcharges straight to the 4x4 truck!

Thanks and dont be to hard on me.
What year? What model? 2011 or newer you have a system that uses the brakes to transfer torque. It is designed to keep both wheels on either the front or rear axle turning at similar speeds and is remarkably effective.

Not true! All the 2011's have it. It augments the mech LSD, and functions on the front axle as well in 4WD

I have an 09 with a 3.31 open diff and I get along just fine. I know I'll regret saying this but after driving my 03 with open diff around the farm through mud and snow drifts and just about anything else and got stuck once when I got high centered in a snow drift. Other than that I think you'll be fine. The traction control will start to **** you off though haha.

4x4 helps a lot, but in 2wd an lsd will go many more places that a open dif will easily get stuck, ive seen them stuck in wet grass, lol!
