Default No check engine light WHY ?

I unplugged the VCT SELONOIDS and still no engine light.
what can I safely unplug to through an erasible code to make sure the light will illuminate, With the key in the on position / engine not running the light comes on.
this truck currently has more problems than a math book.

You could unplug 1 coil on one of the valve covers.

Sounds like you've already established the light works. Maybe you need to work on what's wrong instead of wishing it was a CEL problem. If you want to check codes, use a OBD device of some sort.

I am trying to find my "what's wrong" (problem) I have an inexpensive Actron code reader it did not find a code, a friend found 2 codes with his OCT scanner P0341 & P0346.
As I have been reading my self cross eyed on the Phaser/ VCT selonoids I would first like to find a way to check for power at the VCT selonoids and or when they are energized.

If you don't know what you're doing you might want to leave it alone. Those codes are for camshaft position sensor faults not VCT solenoids or phasers.

I understand the codes cam shaft position sensor A circuit Bank 1 is P0341 and Cam Shaft position sensor bank 2 P0346 .
My truck has 162,500 miles on it and I do all of my own maintenance yeilding 18 miles per gallon and on the highway 21 or 22.
I am just trying to figure out why it is doing the obnoxious rattle every once in a while at low rpms I will figure it out.

What motor? Does it rattle at cold startup after sitting overnight? You could have broken timing chain guides or tensioner seals causing your timing to be off. With those kind of miles, it's probably time for a complete timing set (chains, tensioners, guides phasers)

Pretty sure you need to put her through a few drive cycles before the CEL shows up for an unplugged vct
