Default New 2012 questions

Hey folks,

I'm a bronco guy, just bought a 2012 Platinum 3.5. Wife got sick of projects. But, I've identified some issues that appear to be more than what the sales guys led me to believe. I paid 29k for the thing, which is more than fair market price, as I wanted the platinum with brown leather and a 6.5ft bed. Those combined have been tough to find around here. It'd been on the lot 3 days, so the dealer rightfully wouldn't budge on the price...which was around 7k below market here. I made him sign a paper saying he's giving me a 90 day powertrain warranty because I knew I would use it.

Anyway, issues =
Shudder at low, high, and stop speeds - from research its likely two things. Bad plugs or bad leafs. It feels like axle wrap at low/stop speeds and engine missing/lurching at high speeds. Possibly a weird transfer case issue.

It groans when turning cold at very low speeds. I'm 99% certain this is a ball joint noise. My wife's edge does the same thing. No noise when warm.

I think I have heard the timing chain rattle a time or two.

PO installed 22" rims and 35" mudders...my broncos on coilovers and 37s, no need for another toy, so I want to put some 16 or 18s and ATs on.

PO also has a fabtech lift. Haven't fully inspected it but hoping to throw a nicer lift on / return to stock.

Rides rough - likely due to the plugs lift and wheel/tire choice. I want it smooth like clouds made of butter.

It got less than 14MPG driving on the highway from Portland to Tri-Cities, WA. I suspect this is the plugs fault mostly. Potentially intercooler problems as well.

Anyway, the thing is straight, everything inside is beautiful, and aside from those drivability issues which I'm mostly convinced are easy fixes...and part of the drive train so I'll make the dealer fix most of them anyway, I love it.

----------------------------------------------
I have an appointment with the local Ford dealer to do an inspection and check all the recall/TSB info to see what's been done to it. I added it to my ford page and the vac pump recall popped up, so I'm wondering if the shudder is related to that. It almost feels like the locker or 4wd is coming on by itself.

I have a lawsuit in progress and my wife wants to use the proceeds to trade this in for a 2018 lol, but I'll likely talk her out of it.

I plan on doing this ****, not in this order:
Tonneau
Undercoat
Roadmaster Active Suspension ---- New leafs first maybe
CAI
Full exhaust, none of that catback nonsense
Floor mats
Vac pump recall
New wheels/tires
Tuner
Full tune up and change all fluids - waiting on word from shops/dealer before I do this, not wasting money if they find bigger issues.

Good to be here, and if anyone sees anything crazy or anything I missed let me know. I'll add a photo when I get off work.

Tuner will come first after a tune up most likely. Need to recalibrate the speedo. Its about 20% off...which is wild. Real good for the odometer I guess though, it says 87k. I travelled 1.19 miles when it calced 1 though lol.

30k for a 2012? Wow. In my neck of woods, that gets you a 2013 with half the mileage.

If you have a 90 day warranty, make a video every time you cold start the truck and get that timing chain rattle on video. That would be my priority. I changed the plugs on mine and it was very easy. Hardest part was unplugging the connectors.

That lift and wheel/tire combo will kill your mileage. Mine just got 18 and it has 300,000k on it.

Prices seem to be based on miles only o.o

And in the pnw 4x4 used vehicles retain their value so damned well. My thirty year old bronco will fetch between five and ten k no problem. I think no rust is the biggest thing here, not really sure.

Seemed like I saw tons of 09-2012 in the 25-32k range. **** I almost bought a 2012 king ranch with 120k on the odo, a rattle when the turbo spools, leaks all over the engine for 27k. Dealer wouldn't budge a dime. 2012 lariat that rode nice I would budge passed 24k, the dealer was stuck at 24,800. Thing had been on his lot for 112 days.

It's crazy here lol. I imagine a lot has to do with the income levels maybe. I saw a 12 platinum for 21k but it was a total piece of **** and needed a complete engine rebuild and body/interior tlc.

This was the single platinum I could find that was black with brown interior and all the options so I jumped on it and they only went down 4k from asking lol.

Had my mechanic buddy come over. We managed to trip a misfire code and verified it's misfiring on three cylinders. Dirty air intake too, so I bet sensors need sprayed.

He thinks the shudder is purely torque.

Actually, 29k USD puts you in a 2015 Platinum w/ roughly 60k on the clock. Amazing at how prices seem to be all over the place depending on the region.

Which is exactly why he needs to jump on an airplane and buy a truck elsewhere in the country. He'd save thousands of dollars.

As far as his driveability and gas mileage, 95% of that is due to the 35" tires. Ditch those and return the suspension to near-stock and most problems will go away.

+ 1

Which is why I fly and drive back 13-15 hours for all of my vehicles. One days worth of driving = over 10,000 saved.
