Default Need a spare key

My 2013 XLT came with two keys with the integrated transmitter. I always like having a 3rd key hidden somewhere on the truck in case I lose my key. I don't want to have to call wife to bring her key, and sometimes I am too far away for her to give it to me.

Can I just take the key down to True Value and have a key made that will open the door and start the truck?? Usually my spare key is under the car and subjected to rain, wind, snow and ice.

Or does it have to be one of those with the transmitter that may not be used for years, and will have a dead battery when called into use.

you just have to have a transmitter key, not the one with the remote.

To add to the original post, can you get a blank regular key to use just to open the doors and tailgate? That way I can unlock the tailgate w/o shutting off the truck. Also is it normal for Ford to only provide 2 keys and no spare or valet type keys?

Yes- you can have a spare made for that purpose-to unlock the driver door or the tailgate. I had one made at Home Depot for that very purpose.

you got me.
Both the keys were master keys. I wanted a non-master key. Our 2008 Sequoia I bought came with 3 Master keys and a spare that just opens the door and starts the car, but can't unlock the glove box.

When I bought my 06 they offered me a 3rd key for $25 so I took it. They said that normal price was something like $75-$100, can't remember exactly. But they never offered me a 3rd key with my '11.

I always kept extra keys to my cars on a hook in the garage, The bad thing was, if you lose your keys while away, the key in the garage is useless. Then a light bulb went off! Now I hid my extra ignition key in the cab of the truck since I can alway enter the cab with the keypad on the door. Problem solved!

Excellent ! Asked my salesman to have a non-remote spare key cut for me before I took delivery of the '12 FX. He gave it to me at no charge !!
Now well hidden within the cab, the keyless entry becomes a lifesaver if I were to lose my keys. No good to be able to get into your truck without having the key to start it !!
