Big difference in programming a fob to do something versus a key to do something...

The second key has to be programmed by the dealer. The fob can be programmed by you. The dealer will take your key to the same locksmith that you would probably have gone to to cut your key. Get the key cut yourself. And by all means plan ahead and get a third key. Buy your key wherever you feel comfortable. I bought mine from eBay and they have worked perfect.

Yeah, I'm reading through these few responses here and not seeing much clarity. I was thinking the same thing.. Two keys are needed to have an operable key (to start) and FOB. One key can be used to program multiple FOBs.

I can see where that was helpful on the previous style FOBs like shown in the video but with our keys in my mind it's all or nothing.

Anyone have a good source on OEM keys? I remember the last time I bought the OEM key online it was $100+. Luckily had two keys at that time but of course now I'm down to two again and don't want to be caught re-keying my truck.

Just to clarify, I only had one key for my 2013 F150, and I used it to program the two extra keys I got from Amazon. The programming worked for lock/ unlock as well as the remote start and alarm button. Attached is the key I'm talking about.

This is an amazing find. Thank you for sharing. I lost one of my keys about a month ago and I cannot find it anywhere! The sad part is that I just bought the truck too! I have been trying to weigh some options in my head. I think this will work out great.

Listing on Amazon you link to says you need 2 keys to program the keys to start the truck. Are you claiming that you did this with 1 key and that both keys you bought start the truck also? Lock and unlock is different.

STOP READING ANY FURTHER...

This has been the same for a few years now.

You NEED 2 working chip keys to program any other keys. (remote start fobs are a whole other ball game) If you only have 1 Chip key, you will need to visit the dealer to have a second key programmed. If you are lucky and find a locksmith that can program, great, but make sure you can test the key before you pay because they are hit and miss.

This. If you only have one key, you will have to go to the dealer to get another key programmed to have two keys that will start the vehicle.

I called around and could not find a locksmith that could program a key. The Ford software is not cheap. The cheapest way to do it is to buy a plain chipped key off of ebay or amazon and have the dealer program it. Then you have two keys and you can go buy a fob key and program it yourself.

Thanks guys I found a locksmith that can cut and program keys even if you only have cost. Cost is $68 + $4 to cut. Will have them cut 2 and program 1.

A locksmith can only "clone the key" which means you will have a working extra key but you WILL NOT be able to program any extras using those two keys, the PATS (passive anti theft system) will see them both as the same key.

The fob part of the key as mentioned can be programmed by the end user. The pats chip requires a proprietary computer/software interface known as IDS to make the vehicle start with the ability to be able to program any more extra keys should you want/need them.
