Anything missing from the STX that the lariat had can easily be added (minus 4x4), but you can't remove mileage!!
If I were to buy a brand new one I'd most likely get the lariat but I couldn't justify the price for lariats on a 10 year old model year truck. My criteria was under 75k miles, 5.0 engine, and under 20k and this was the only one lol.

I went from a 97 4.6 SCAB 4X4 XLT to a 13 5.0 SCAB XLT, and you're right the 5.0 compared to the 4.6 is just amazing.

My upgrade was essentially a move up to the same truck, 16 years newer.
Same body configuration (Scab, 6.5 bed), same gear ratio (3.55), 4X4 and trailer tow.

The things I like most about the newer year features are the 1/2 doors on both sides (97 was passenger side only), the roll down windows in the 1/2 doors, and without a doubt the integrated trailer brake controller.
I almost forget my boat is back there....at least until I roll into the throttle and that coyote starts growlin'!
