Correct PSI = good MPG and properly wearing tires. Too much or too little = bad wearing tires. It should give a cold reccomendation on the side of the tire. I always go about 35psi cold and adjust up a little if I have a big load (theres another reading on the tire for max pressure) follow those.

You can vary the PSI, but if you overinflate, you make the center go bald. Underinflate, and you increase the chance of flats, and make the edges eat most of the wear. I tend to go a little bit over the recommended amount, but making sure never to go over the max pressure.

the correct psi will depend on the vehicle and how it's loaded. a regular cab will require a different psi than a supercrew.

Ford usually puts a sticker on the driver side door sill with recommended PSI's.

chalk test. you want the width of the tire to contact the road, too little pressure and the outer edges will but the center will not, too much pressure and the center will, the edges will not. that is why it varies from one truck to another, also, rim width and tire size play a role. of course, then you also need to consider the weight carrying rating of the tire...
