Never even thought about this but what you guys are saying is...

...that you have to have the two original keys to program extra keys, but what type of key? Just a regular key without any electronics?

I just got my 3rd key made today. I got it at Ebay. 2 for $17.95. I'm using that key for emergency only. I'm also waiting for my extra remote start device. I didn't realize that the 200 series plug n plaly only had one remote. The dealer quoted me $125 and I'm getting the second one for $48.

So if I buy one of those cheap keys (only the key, no fob, no buttons just compatible) from eBay, get that cut and programmed at the dealership - then I should be good to buy any other device (fob, remote starter) that I want?

Do you have a link to your seller?

What year is your truck?

Keys and remotes are two separate systems. You need two keys just because you don’t want someone (unscrupulous valet, etc.) who gets their hands on one key to make themselves a copy. This part of the key is the embedded chip that lets you start the truck.

The fob is a different philosophy. You don’t even need an original fob to make a duplicate fob. Using your ignition key, you can have the truck learn which fobs to use. So if you suspect that someone has a “duplicate" fob, you can teach the truck which fobs are the legitimate fobs and it’ll forget the rest.

If you’re shopping for either, spend some time surfing eBay for what you’re after and read some of the threads here to find out which year keys/fobs are compatible with your year truck.

That's the link of the auction. I went to 3 places to cut the key and they gave me some bs excuse that it's store policy not to cut a key with a ship. I told them that it's my key and I will pay just the wear and tear of the machine to make it. Finally, went to a local hardware who finally cut it for me. It was a high school kid who was kind of nervous but I told him if he messed up it was ok. I got a spare one if he messed up.
My truck is a 2011 XLT. I just programmed the key this morning. Place one original and turn it on position and then off. Get the 2nd key put it inside and turn it on and off. Got the 3rd key and turned it on the motor. I heard the doors locking when I did this. I turned it off and on 5 times to make sure it was working. I'm happy I got the 3rd key. Now, my brother wants the spare that came with ebay auction so he can make a 3rd key for his Ford Focus.

Yes, I believe that's true.

You just need two previously programmed keys, not necessarily the original keys. I tried it and used one of my original keys plus my first already programmed key to program a second ebay spare key, and it worked just fine.
