Looking for thoughts/comments on error codes
Hi guys. Having some trouble with my truck and wanted the forum's opinion please. I wasn't sure if I was suppose to post this in the maintenance section so if that was the case, my apologies.
A few weeks ago, I noticed that every now and then my truck would sputter when coming to a stop. Almost like it was going to die. It didn't happen every time and I could usually get it to idle correctly if I tapped once quickly on the gas pedal. Then a couple of days later, the check engine light came on. I took it by Auto Zone and had the codes read. Came up with a P0012 and P0022. For those that do not know what the codes are, they are as follows :
Varable cam timing over retarded - bank 1 (for the p0012) and bank 2 (for the 0022).
The ECM has detected the VCT position in an over retarded condition
Possible Cause
Cam timing incorrect
VCT solenoid stuck open
After work that day, started my truck and the check engine light was off for the drive on the way home. It's yet to come back on but I still get the sporadic sputtering. After looking at the power train warranty, I've determined that this should be covered but an email to the service manager and two voice mails have been unanswered. Out of frustration, this had led me to try and self diagnose and maybe fix it myself.
My thinking is that I could replace the VCT solenoids and that should fix the problem. I don't think the cam timing is incorrect because it's not happening all the time.
Soooo, my questions are these -
Could it still be the cam timing?
If not the cam timing and probably VCT, is there anything else I should look at before I replace them? I did have the oil pressure checked and I change my oil when needed. My truck is a 2010 with 42k miles on it.
Any comments/questions/suggestions are appreciated.
