Question Interesting Scenario!

A couple observations: 1) I've read a lot of threads on here about guys debating whether or not to trade in their 5.4 3V for the new 5.O.

2) I've also noticed a number of threads talking about how the new 5.0 is superior, but not a blow your mind improvement over the 5.4 3V. Don't know if this is true or not.

So, my question is this: How would a 5.4 3V with a 5 Star SCT3 tune or, any tune for that matter, measure up against a new stock 5.0 all else being equal?

I honestly have no idea since I have never driven a tuned 5.4 nor the 5.0. Not trying to stir anything up...just curious.

It seems silly to lose $ in a trade just to have the 5.0 when for several hundred you might be able to get the 5.4 in the ballpark of the 5.0 with a tune. Note: I'm talking about strictly trading for the motor...not for any of the other differences/improvements between model years.

I'm not putting anyone's rig down here. I love them all. If one has the money to trade up...great, but if one doesn't or doesn't want to, wouldn't this make sense?

So in short, tuned 5.4 3V VS Stock 5.0 All Else being Equal.

What do you guys think?

Ok, I have a '09 FX4 screw 6.5 bed, with a 5.4 and SCT, my buddy has a company truck that is '11 XLT 4x4 5.5 bed with the 5.0. At the time I was over 100k miles and his was brand new.
He can out run me, but not by much, which he should, the 5.0 has 4 valve heads and higher compression. Which, in a sense is a whole different breed of motor. Kinda like comparing a '99 4.6 Mustang GT to '99 4.6 Mustang Cobra. Two totally different engines.

Would I trade in for a 5.0? No way!

I traded my 2010 fx4 5.4 for a 2011 fx4 5.0. No motor mods, but the 10 had a magnaflow cat-back. (Which doesn't really add any power)

The 5.0 is night and day different from my 5.4

As far as a tuned 5.4, I have no idea.

Sad thing is people don't drag race every time they drive their trucks. So the 5.0 beats the 5.4 by a sec or two. Whoopy tee doo. I drove next to a 5.0 the other day in traffic and I beat him because his lane was slower. In the real world it's really rediculous to worry about whose truck is faster. If you drag race on the weekends then ya you want the fastest, but going back and forth to work or just driving around who really cares. There frickin trucks not Corvettes or Porches.

Well my best friend has a 5.4 and he took my 5.0 and I have driven the 5.4 and he is selling his 5.4 2009 screw based on his drive in mine. I can say if your unsure rent a 5.0 for a day and try it yourself, unless you know someone who owns a 5.0

Racing is one thing, towing is another ball game. Drive a 5.4 with custom tune and tell your buddy to save his money.

Thanks for responding guys. To me I really don't care. I have no desire to race my truck. I have another toy for that. Just curious how they would match up as stated in the beginning. For me, I love my 5.4 and I am sure I would love the 5.0 too. I was just reading some threads and it seemed like some guys were agonizing over this decision to have the latest and greatest.

I guess I couldn't understand that if a fella was on the fence, why not just tune the 5.4 up a bit and save some cash.

I'm not sure why anyone is talking about which truck will go faster when deciding which one to buy.

I guess I was thinking they were talking about overall performance. Not just speed, but grunt/quickness, etc. too.
