How to visually spot difference in tank sizes?
Hi all,
i have a 2010 FX2 with the 4.6L 3V and 26 gallon tank. I’d like to upgrade to the 36 gallon tank, and the local pick-n-pull has a 2014 in their yard. My question is what do I need to look for on the donor tank to confirm if it’s a 26 or 36 gallon tank?
On a related subject, the donor truck’s VIN is 1FTMF1CM1EFB73373. I tried running this through the VIN decoder, but it seems to just list both tank sizes as options. It’s very possible that I was either missing something or using a decoder site that’s not as helpful as some of the others.

The first clue would be if it is a Screw or a Scab. My Scab wouldn't be able to fit a 36gal tank so I will assume both trucks are Screw. If the donor is a Screw it would most likely have the 36gal tank but not always. Have you measured your tank? If the tank in the donor is longer than it would be the 36gal version. Other than those two there really isn't anyway to look at it and tell.
When I crawled under my truck this AM while writing my replay, I didn't see any kind of room for a 36gal tank but I could be mistaken, I usually am LOL.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! The diagram is especially helpful, as it shows the larger tank has a bit of a bump on the one end, and is elongated on the other vs the 26 gallon tank. Converting the measurements on the diagram from mm to inches, it looks like the 36 gallon tank is about 10 inches longer so should be easy enough to check with a tape measure (26 gallon = 64 inches, 36 gallon = 74.2 inches).
Alll I need for the swap is the tank, pump assembly and heat shield, right?

Also, on the subject of if the tank will physically fit a Scab, I think it should fit no problem since most Scabs and Screws share the same chassis with the different size of the cabs being accommodated by the bed length. I could be mistaken, but I thought most Scabs are 6.5 foot beds, and most Screws are 5.5 foot beds. While there are a few Screws with 6.5 foot beds, I think that’s a pretty rare combo. Although that being said, a Screw with a 6.5 foot bed would be fairly desirable to someone like me that still needs the longer bed for hauling motorcycles.
