How far back does the Miles to Empty display look and how does it set itself?
OK....here's what happened on my last three fill ups...stay with me here if you can, please?
1. Fill up, tow our 8,500 pound trailer 180 miles -- 8.5 mpg -- 310 miles to empty after I filled up to go home....no problem, just about right.
2. When we got home, still have half a tank, so I reset the mpg display and drove 50 miles, getting 22 mpg......fill up when I get there --- but still only 388 miles to empty displayed.
3. Drive the 50 miles back home getting 23.5 (55 to 60 mph on rural two lane)....still only 380 miles to empty --- so I drove 50 miles and the MTE display dropped 8 miles.
4. Leave home yesterday to drive 200 miles (100 each way) with MTE reading 388 miles to empty when we left. While driving, the MTE briefly flashed up to 425 miles to empty, then dropped back to about 385. When we got there, MTE display read 360 miles ---I got 22 mpg but this was 100 miles of driving and only a 28 mile drop in the MTE.
5. Leave for the 100 mile trip home with the MTE showing 360 -- again got over 22.5 mpg, and the MTE did not drop AT ALL for 80 miles...then dropped correctly per mile for the last 20....so basically we drove 200 miles with the MTE dropping only 48. Now, I have less than half a tank of gas and 340 miles to empty, so the display is likely now accurate, and will go to near 700 miles on my next fill up.....but still.....
If you've read this far ---- THANK YOU --- My question is how far back into the mpg stats does (or should) the MTE display look and why would it not have reset with the fill ups, or with the truck getting so much better mpg later in the tank(s) of gas.
There was absolutely no way that at 3/4 of a tank of gas in a 36 gallon tank and getting over 22 mpg that we had only 388 miles to empty -- more like 600 should have been displayed.
Anyone else notice this --- and IS there a way to force the MTE display to reset itself?

Edit:
With the research that I've done on this issue, the MTE display looks back at the last FIVE tanks of gas for its average.....Ford, that is too far to look back, and with all the computing power that new vehicles have, why does it take so long for the MTE to be even reasonably accurate for current driving conditions??!!

Having same issue last 3 tanks. Filled up with 35 gallons each time and my miles to empty are only 370. I did avg 15 MPG and I reset trip every time I fill, each time was around 535 miles driven. Filled up again yesterday, miles to empty jump to 398 drove 124.8 miles and M to E was at 369. Really annoying.

It should know how much is in the tank, and average it on the current MPG's you are getting per tank. I had a car that when I reset the MTE, it would show 0 until you started driving. Then, once it knew the MPG's I was running it would start to calculate. Hammer the throttle and what not it would adjust if your MPG's were going down. Not sure why Fords' doesn't do this. I have not yet had to fill mine up, so I guess I will see what happens when I do.

What do you think you have in the on board computer? Do you really think its accurate?
I get a real laugh out of the people on the forum that spout the mpg numbers from the display and think that's a real number. If you aren't using a calculator to do the math after a fill up, you're not getting the real mpg. The 50 miles to empty is based on the gas gauge, not some magical computer that is looking back 3 tanks of gas. Get real. MTE accurate? Really? Really?
Oh I get it. This thread was a joke. Lol. Lol
Next there will be a thread about the computer dreaming when you turn off the key.......... I'm in. I vote yes.

I do not want an "instantaneous" update to the MTE, but I would really think that having the truck look back 50 --- maybe even 100 miles and give you that average per gallon traveled would be a LOT more useful than what is happening as described above. Kind of useless the way Ford has it programmed to display MTE...almost wish I could turn it off if it is not going to be more accurate than this, yet still display current mpg.
My 2013 is accurate enough that I can guess the gallons that it takes to fill the truck. Everytime. With a 26 gallon tank I've had it read as high as 555 mte a few times. It it gets down to around 80 to empty I know it'll take about 21 to 22 gallons.
