Default How does this happen? Melting

So last week the weather hit about 5 degrees. Start the truck and turn on the defroster. Notice the following night that my mirror is bubbled warped . Take it into ford thinking this would be fixed no problem as the only has 7k and is a 2014. No luck. They state that there is no wiring under this part of the mirror so the damage is not from a wiring defect do they are not going to replace it. I continue to argue with the service guy asking him to give me a reasonable explaination on what caused this. He tells me that the only way ford will pay for this is if the damage is from faulty wiring. They will not cover the plastic for defect.

Sooooo.. I am curious if anybody has seen anything like this before? I am really curios to figure out what happened.

looks like someone has it out for you. Irregular pattern on the burn/melting, my bet is low life kids messing around.

some people have had issues before with this - not exact but some issues

I am going to lean toward wiring - have you got into the mirror and checked to see if you have had wiring overheat? If not the I would suspect you may have something reflecting heat from the sun or maybe even vandals but it looks as though it is coming from the inside out and too uniform along that reflector and not affecting the reflector

looks like the heater grid in the mirror shorted out.

Pull it apart and check wiring.

I would be contacting the Ford service rep via PM on this site. Ford would be best served to dig into this deeper before it DOES become common.

That odd pattern would not likely be caused by an external heat source so I doubt it was caused by anyone tampering with it.

To get the plastic hot enough to make that "line" of bubbles sure looks like a hot wire inside would be the cause.

Am I the only one that is disturbed by the dealer's service rep. blatantly denies a reasonable investigation into the matter? I mean, he doesn't even say something like "wow, that's weird. Never seen that before. Let's get a tech to have a look at it and see what's going on...". I mean, even if it wasn't something they would cover under warranty, you think they would want to "make a sale".

Sheesh - freakin' lousy dealers anyway

Tell me about it. They said that they would investigate it further but if it is not the wiring ie. They are not at fault I would have to pay for the dianostic time. I pulled the mirror off myself but can't find any diagnosis for the problem.

Do you have a rear defroster? If you do, it's possible that it has stopped working and when that happens, the mirrors (if they're heated) get hotter than they normally would.
Just a thought. And yes, your dealer sounds like an ***.
